How To Start A Blog
So you are interested in starting a blog. Blogging can be a lot of fun. It provides you with a creative outlet to express your feelings, interest, and hobbies. I first considered blogging five years ago then got intimidated because I couldn’t figure out exactly how to make the technical side happen. Since then the thought was never far from my mind. I really wanted to tackle a blog and make it work. This past Summer, (Summer of 2017) I dove in and went for it. Today, I am going to share with you the basic steps to get up and running, but first the legal part. This post does contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure statement for more information. Okay, now that I have that out of the way let’s get started. Here is how to start a blog in 5 easy steps:
1)Select Your Name
Select a name that fits you and your niche or your focus. What content will you be blogging about? After you have a name in mind do some research online to see if it is available. Check any social media platforms for the availability of your name should you desire to have related pages on these medias. Be conscious of names similar or close to yours and think about the issues that could arise by the similarity.
2) Register Your Domain Name
This is your web address, for example, yourname.com. It is strongly recommended that you choose a “.com” as opposed to a “.net ” “.org” etc. There are many sites that offer domain registration. You may opt to register your name with your host. This saves a step and keeps it simple. I highly recommend Bluehost for hosting and you can register your domain name with them for free when you use them as your host. I chose to have my domain and hosting on separate sites, just in case one goes down. Just an added layer of security. My domain is registered with Hover. Their site is easy to navigate and the rates are affordable.
3) Choose Your Host
The host is where your blog resides. You want a reputable host because this determines your site’s speed and accessibility. There are many host providers to choose from. I use Bluehost. With Bluehost, you receive Customer Support 24/7, free email accounts, and WordPress install is only a click away. Bluehost is affordable and great for new bloggers. Again, you can complete both steps 2 and 3 with Bluehost if you want to keep it simple. I have a step by step guide below to walk you through signing up with Bluehost start to finish.
4) Install Your WordPress Account
This can be done very easily with Bluehost on your account Dashboard. A side note about WordPress, don’t confuse WordPress.com for WordPress.org. WordPress.com is very limiting whereas wordpress.org is self-hosting and gives you more control.
5) Dress Up Your Blog With Themes
Now that you have a blog you want to design it. This is the fun part. Your theme determines how your site looks. The colors, fonts, menus, buttons, etc. Unless you know how to write code you will want to use Genesis Framework. This is the foundation for your site theme. Then to add décor and personality you’ll want to select a Child Theme. If you desire a generic or masculine theme stick with Genesis to select your child theme. If you want a pretty feminine look I suggest Restored 316 Designs. Lauren has many feminine themes to choose from. The system is easy to use. The website is full of information and tips. You will find answers to any questions you have regarding your theme in their extensive resource library. They share lots of other blogging tips and tools too.
When I decided to dive into blogging I didn’t do it alone. I wanted a resource to guide me through. This is when I found Abby. Abby has a very successful DIY and Organizational blog called justagirlandherblog. After learning how to blog the slow hard way she created tutorials to save new bloggers the time and headaches of trying to figure it all out. I took her Building A Framework, The Ultimate Blogging Handbook course online. It has been one of the best investments I ever made. If you truly want to thrive at blogging, you need to take her course. Abby and her husband, Donny, cover all aspects of blogging and then some. Abby also has an abbreviated 10 Day Blogging Quickstart course and multiple other lessons. She has such a cute friendly, helpful demeanor. You will love her! The value of her course is well beyond the price you pay.
