They were so right when they said it’s harder to stay in shape the older you get! The fact is our muscle mass naturally decreases with age due to hormonal changes, lack of exercise and inadequate protein intake, to name a few. As women we tend to place our personal needs on the back burner while raising our families. Then the time comes when we want to refocus on our fitness, but we may be disappointed with our progress. Good news is it is not a lost cause. Fitness over 40 can be a little challenging, but it is completely possible.
I am excited to share my fitness story with you. Fitness has been important to me since I was in the 7th grade. Summer mornings started with Jane Fonda, Sports Illustrated or Denise Austin workout videos in our basement. I took weightlifting in high school and could bench press more than many of the guys in my class. Through the years I had phases of gym memberships, including family memberships when our kids were old enough. However, I have always enjoyed home workouts more than the gym. I also knew that eating right and drinking protein shakes were important to fitness success. Diet is half the battle and I thought I did okay here.
The past few years have been very challenging though. It seemed that nothing was really making a difference in the shape I was in. I am currently 46 and work a very physical job. I thought this would be good enough. I am active all day long, moving in ways that emulate various exercises. I was eating right, but it was not enough. My mom belly looked worse 16 years after my youngest baby than it did 2 years after he was born! I was frustrated. I figured the only hope for my troubled “mommy area” was cosmetic surgery. This was not a realistic option for me though. It’s too expensive and I don’t have down time for recovery.
Then I stumbled across a program online that has been a real game changer for me. I feel great and even better…I see results! I feel my body getting firmer from the inside out. I have lost a lot of inches. I’m starting to think I can be happy with my abs without a tummy tuck. Next week will be my 1 year fitversary and I can’t wait to share this plan with you. The continuation of this story is now on the blog here.
